Last year, singer-songwriter Michelle Shocked married Phoenix author Bart Bull on the Fourth of July.

So why didn’t they get as much press as Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett?

“I like that question,” Shocked said. “I don’t know. But that’s one of the reasons I’m really looking forward to playing in Phoenix, because he is somewhat of a celebrity there.”

Bull is a native of the Valley. He was a music and film critic for several publications here, including New Times and the former City Life. He is currently working on a novel.

Shocked plays in the Valley for the first time at the Rockin’ Horse, 7000 E. Indian School Road, Scottsdale. The first show is at 8 p.m. today, the second at 8 p.m. Monday.

“These shows in Phoenix have enormous sentimental value to me,” she said. “I married a native Arizonan, so it’s my adopted home state now. You can’t spend too much time around my husband without thinking Arizona is the greatest state in the Union.

“I’ve never played there. It’s like a debut. I love that. I look forward to seeing the relations again, too.”
