Michelle Shocked with special guests, Poi Dog Pondering and John Wesley Harding will be at the Westport Playhouse on May 11 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $19.

Michelle Shocked is a folksinger in the great American tradition, but she’s a folksinger who defies traditions. Having lived a part of her life as a member of this country’s underclass—Michelle was homeless even as she had an album that was #26 on the U.K. independent charts—her soulful songs hint at the hardships she and others have experienced. But there is no absence of joy there either; the playful romping of the rhythm and blues in her latest album, Captain Swing, is a testament to Michelle’s diverse and often uplifting songwriting ability. Michelle Shocked is at one moment country, and at another pure blues. Her philosophy and world views shine through: “The real purpose of my albums,” says Michelle, “is to suggest that music, beyond style, is about feeling… The best music always has an organic whole greater than the sum of its parts.”

Come share the diverse and uplifting music of Michelle Shocked at her concert at the Westport Playhouse, Friday, May 11.

Tickets are available at all Tickets Now outlets including Famous-Barr, Music Vision and Record Company locations, Mississippi Nights box office, Westport Playhouse box office; and by calling DIALTIX 434-6600.
