Michelle Shocked is taking Britain by storm during a tour of the country which next Monday will bring her direct style to the Corn Exchange in Cambridge.

The show, like tonight’s concert by old rock idol Gary Glitter, is sold out, but it is still worth enquiring at the box office for cancellations.

Born in Dallas in 1962, she spent years travelling around Army bases with her stepfather before settling in Dallas, where he introduced her to bluegrass festivals and back porch guitar-picking sessions.

After moving to what she calls “Reagan’s America” in 1983, she joined ranks with squatters and composed anti-establishment songs, until her first record was released on Pete Lawrence’s Cooking Vinyl label (recorded direct into his Sony Walkman).

Now she is a highlight on “Top of the Pops” after a year’s break, and her tour has included three days at the London Palladium.

Also released recently was her single entitled, “On the Greener Side.”
