Michelle Shocked was determined to take her fans back to the swinging sounds of Dixieland – by recreating a slow, mellow Sunday afternoon atmosphere.

Helped on by her seven-man band, we were, almost literally, back in New Orleans.

The band made full use of the sax, trumpet, and mouth organ to slip through the new and acclaimed album, Captain of Swing. [sic]

It was almost with apology that she sang her hit single, “Anchorage,” which she left to finish her first encore.

But the offbeat singer with the natural folksy voice was always best when she had a solo accompanied only by her guitar.

This was for the simple reason that she has a brilliant voice.

By the end and after a skillful 90-minute set, Michelle Shocked had served notice that she certainly refuses to be pigeon-holed.

She will offer great musical things in the next decade.
