Putting Billy Bragg and Michelle Shocked on the same bill was a brave, if not strange, move. The duo has just completed a short pre-election tour of the States campaigning for Dukakis.
Like last night’s show, their motives were commendable, but the end result was disappointing. Shocked follows a long tradition of American singer-songwriters. She writes and delivers some fine songs, among the best last night being those from her current album. Bragg on the other hand makes much of his lack of musicianship and tuneless singing, which now sounds rather tedious.
