Shocked, with a horn fanfare

Rabble-rouser Michelle Shocked has found herself an orchestra. Like fellow Texan singer-songwriter Lyle Lovett, who recently toured with a “Large Band,” Shocked is performing with a horn section behind her.

Shocked came to prominence in England four years ago after a British producer heard her singing at the Kerrville (Texas) Folk Festival; the resulting record climbed to No. 1 on British charts. Shocked then turned down part of a U.S. recording contract because she didn’t want to be beholden to the label.

An Army brat who became fascinated with the counterculture of the ‘60s and ‘70s, she has been an activist on behalf of homeless people. Her first U.S. album, Short Sharp Shocked was ranked among Top 10 releases of 1988 by nation’s rock critics. With British singer-songwriter John Wesley Harding opening for her, Shocked today will perform music from her current release, Captain Swing, and more at 8 p.m. in the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis. Tickets are $18.50; call 989-5151.
