Michelle Shocked and the Casualties of Wah, Pony Stars

Rebounding from an elongated and bitter battle with her former record label, Mercury, Michelle Shocked returns with a new Private Music release, Kind Hearted Woman, which she’d been selling only at shows while it was tied up in litigation. Shocked’s lawyers gave her the OK, and now she’s hittin’ the road with her outfit, the Casualties of Wah.

Over the years, this prolific, if unfocused, songstress has been one of the more consistently entertaining live performers. She tosses off witty lines as if she’s got a basement full of ‘em. After a folky start, Shocked has dabbled in swing, country, and rock, but her latest effort is, she says, “a very stark collection of story-songs set in a rural America.”

The day of her La Luna show, Shocked also gives a free performance at 5 p.m. at Music Millennium East (3158 E. Burnside St.) (RM)

La Luna, 215 SE 9th Ave., 241-5862. 9 p.m.
Tuesday, Oct. 22. $13.
