LIVERING IT UP: After a month on the road as the backing trio for Michelle Shocked, Austin's Bad Livers have returned to town with a taste of upward mobility and a better head for the big picture.
"It was real educational," said bassist Mark Rubin. "We got a chance to see how an artist of her stature is handled, and how management organization works. You can't beat being taken around in a bus, being put up in a hotel and given money."
The tour introduced the band in plenty of cities it had never played before, while additionally bringing it to the attention of radio stations and PolyGram branch offices where Shocked made promotional appearances. Having just released their debut single - the bluegrassy adaptation of Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life" - the Livers plan to concentrate more on recording than on local club gigs for the rest of the year.
"We're gonna have to play less and get paid more," said Rubin. "And nobody in Austin will pay more."
The Hole in the Wall welcomes the band home for a Halloween set tonight, and the Livers will open tomorrow's Mojo Nixon show at Liberty Launch.
